Volunteer Opportunities

There’s lots to do, and we can probably use your help! Our greatest need is for people to take on roles in our core leadership team, but there will always be low-commitment opportunities for you to drop in occasionally or help out with a one-time event.

Check out the leadership roles below and drop us a line if you want to get involved! If none of these roles interest you, if you’ve got a special skill we didn’t address, or if you want to be a kick-butt generalist, just email us - there’s room for you!

Librarian

Responsibilities

  • Check tools in and out

  • Help members find tools on the shelves and in the computer

  • Walk members through the membership signup process

Requirements

  • People skills

  • Patience

Nice to have

  • Tool experience

Time Commitment

  • 6-8+ hours a month

Tool Maintenance

Responsibilities

  • Sort tool donations into keep, pass along, and discard groups

  • Triage tools reported broken by members

  • Order replacement parts as needed

  • Help design regular maintenance schedules for tools

Requirements

  • Tool knowledge and experience

  • Ability to troubleshoot tools

Time Commitment

  • 2-4+ hours a month

Programming and Education

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and scheduling of safety trainings for members

  • Work with library leadership and outreach to create ideas and opportunities for workshops

Requirements

  • Leadership and ability to manage a team

  • Organization and follow-through

Nice to have

  • Curriculum-building or programming experience

Time Commitment

  • 6-8+ hours a month

Volunteer Coordination

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that regular volunteer librarian, events, and workday shifts are assigned

  • Field questions from potential volunteers

  • Train new volunteers

Requirements

  • Working with volunteer management software or Google apps

  • Regular access to computer

Time Commitment

  • 1-2 hours a week

Fundraising and Events

Responsibilities

  • Conceive, plan, and execute plans for social and fundraising events

Requirements

  • Desire to bring people together

  • Attention to detail and solid organizational and communication skills

Time Commitment

  • Project-based for the duration of an event’s planning and execution

Grants and Development

Responsibilities

  • Identify grants that are a good fit for the library

  • Track grant application dates in a centralized location

  • Assist in the writing of grants (in collaboration with other folks at the library)

Requirements

  • Knowledge of grant writing or the willingness to learn about the process

  • Attention to detail and solid organizational and communication skills

Time Commitment

  • 2-4+ hours a month

Social Media

Responsibilities

  • Plan out social media campaigns around important library milestones (crowd funding campaigns, parties, opening day, etc.)

  • Author social media posts in keeping with the library’s vision and mission, specifically in regard to being as inclusive as possible.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or other social networks

  • Solid grammar and writing skills

Nice To Have

  • Experience with social media scheduling  or management tools

Time Commitment

  • 2-4+ hours a month

Community Engagement

Responsibilities

  • Work with community partners to collaborate, attend, or host events like tool drives, farmers markets, neighborhood builds, etc.

  • Build partnerships with likeminded organizations and businesses

  • Attend events and oversee setup and teardown

Requirements

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Ability to identify appropriate community opportunities and work with library leadership

Time Commitment

  • 2-4+ hours a month
